1.Melbourne City Circle Tram: A great way to introduce yourself to the City of Melbourne. The distinctively coloured burgundy tram operates daily on a circuit of Melbourne, passing a number of attractions and with an onboard commentary. The tram is a free hop on hop off experience. The Melbourne City Circle Tram operates daily from 10am to 6pm and to 9pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday during daylight savings.
2.Shrine of Remembrance: Located on St Kilda Road Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance is possibly Melbourne’s most stirring of buildings. Originally dedicated to the fallen soldiers from World War I, the shrine now is a symbol of recognition for all those who have fallen. The Eternal Flame is found in the forecourt. Admission is free.
3.Yarra River: Melbourne’s Yarra River runs along one side of Federation Square and Flinders Street Station and its opposite bank is Southbank. It is a great place to have a BBQ (facilities provided) watch the rowers or during the annual Moomba festival site back and enjoy the Moomba Masters Waterskiing.
4.Captain Cooks Cottage: This cottage was transported brick by brick, or probably more accurately stone but stone from Great Ayton in Yorkshire England and reconstructed in the Fitzroy Gardens in 1934. It is believed Captain James Cook lived in the cottage between his voyages. Open daily from 9am, Entry is free.
5.Melbourne Town Hall: Located on the corner of Swanston and Collins Streets the Melbourne Town Hall conducts several free weekday tours. Bookings are essential and recommended to be made at least one day prior.
6.Flinders Street Station: Possibly Melbourne’s most recognised landmark, Flinders Street Station is the central focal point of Melbourne’s transport network. It is a popular meeting place, on the steps under the clocks and is open from 5am – 3am daily.
7.Federation Square: Located opposite from Flinders Street Station, Federation Square is a blend of unique and striking architecturally designed buildings which sits between the Melbourne CBD and the Parks and Gardens just across the Yarra River. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants in ‘Fed’ Square as the locals like t call it and it is also home to the Ian Potter Centre.
8.The Ian Potter Centre - NGV Australia: This is home to the world’s finest gallery dedicated to Australian art. Its rotating exhibition represents all of Australia’s greats and often features some of Australia’s most significant and recognised works. Located in Federation Square Entry is free.
9.Australian Centre for the Moving Image: Dedicated to Australian and International Films and screen based art the ACMI is located in Federation Square. Some exhibits do incur a fee but entry to the Screen Gallery is free and is open from 10am daily.
10.National Gallery of Victoria: is a short walk from Flinders Street Station and is home to an extensive collection of international artworks. The Gallery is closed on Tuesdays but opens other days from 10am. Entry is free but special exhibits do attract a fee.
11.Royal Botanic Gardens (City of Melbourne): Located a 10-15 minute walk from Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Royal Botanical Gardens include more than 12,000 different plant varieties and various Australian animals including wallabies, possums and birdlife. There is a Free self guided walk and an audio presentation is also available.
12.Queen Victoria Market: The ‘Queen Vic’ or ‘Vic Market’ is in full operation each Sunday with a vast variety of produce, clothing, gifts, décor and other consumables. There are also a number of cafes and restaurants around the market and buskers perform regularly. The market is also open on a smaller scale Tuesday and Thursday.
13.Crown Casino: While the gaming tables are the centre piece of the Crown Casino Entertainment Complex there is also an extensive selection of shops and eateries which can provide hours of idle entertainment for those not interested in the gambling ‘opportunities’
14.Melbourne Beaches: Located on Port Phillip Bay Melbourne has a number of popular beaches which can be easily reached from the City. Kerferd Road Beach in South Melbourne and St Kilda Beach have long been the ‘places to be seen’ and offer cool and calm waters to cool off during warm Melbourne nights.
15.Melbourne City Square: Situated on the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets, the Melbourne City square has in many ways been superseded by Federation Square. It is, however, an enjoyable place to sit back and take in the water features and visit Melbourne’s giant red gum wombat.
16.St Paul’s Cathedral: Located at one of the busiest intersections in Melbourne and opposite Flinders Street Station, St Paul’s Cathedral was built in 1892 and the headquarters of Melbourne’s Anglican community. It has a highly decorated interior, English organ and patterned floor tiles. The Cathedral is open daily, weekdays from 7am and weekends from 8.30am.
17.Sidney Myer Music Bowl: Located in the gardens of Kings Domain the Sidney Myer Music Bowl hosts a number of annual concerts which are free to the general public. There are also a number of ticketed events.
18. Victoria Police Museum: Located at the Victoria Police Centre, Concourse Level, 637 Flinders Street, Melbourne, the Victorian Police Museum is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 04:00 pm. Admission is Free.
19.ANZ Bank Museum: Located at 380 Collins Street, Melbourne, the ANZ Bank Museum is open Monday to Friday 9.30am to 4pm. Closed Bank Holidays. Admission is free.
20.The Block Arcade: The Block Arcade was built in 1891 and is a grand arcade featuring mosaic floors and boutique shops modelled on the European arcades of the late 1800’s
21.Scot’s Church: Located at the corner of Collins Street and Russell Road, Melbourne, Scots Church was built 1873 with heavy gothic influences
22.St Michaels Uniting Church: A Romanesque church located at the corner Collins Street and Russell Road, Melbourne.
23. Sunday Market at the Arts Centre: Located alongside the Yarra Rive just below the Melbourne Arts centre the Sunday Market is small but busy with hand crafted niche products, crafts and paintings for sale.
24.Bourke Street Mall: A great place to people watch or enjoy the buskers performing. There are of course plenty of shops along the mall as well.
25.Manchester Unity Building: A 1930’s building which was at one stage Melbourne’s tallest.
26.State Library of Victoria: Located at the top end of Swanston Street and on the corner of Latrobe Street the State Library of Victoria is an impressive building for both its architecture and resource. It is open daily from 10am
27.National Post Master Gallery: Located at 321 Exhibition Street the National Post Master Gallery is open daily. Tuesday – Fridays from 10am and Saturday to Monday from 12 noon. On site is Australia’s National Philatelic Collection. Entry is free.
28.Chinatown: Running along Little Bourke Street between Swanston and Spring Streets is Melbourne’s Chinatown. There is a broad selection of restaurants, cafes, asian supermarkets and shops selling asian products.
29. Parliament House of Victoria: At the top end of Bourke Street you will find the Parliament House of Victoria which also served as Australia’s federal Parliament house between 1901 and 1927. Tours run from 10am with the last tour commencing at 3.45pm.
30.Treasury Gardens: The Treasury Gardens are located off Spring Street behind the Victorian Treasury Building.
31.Fitzroy Gardens: The Fitzroy Gardens covers 65 acres and includes attractions such as the Avenue of Elms, lawns, lakes and extensive flowerbeds. It is located at the corner of Lansdowne Street and Wellington Parade and is open daily 9am to 5pm.
32.Fire Services Museum Victoria: Celebrating the history of fire fighting in Victoria, the Fire Services Museum is open Fridays and Sundays from 10am.
