The Melbourne Moomba Birdman Rally is one of the more comic events of the festival and was first held in 1976. The launch platform is traditionally held at the Swan Street Bridge though in recent years the location has been alternated between Melbourne Docklands and Birrarung Marr. The objective of the Birdman Rally is to travel (fly) as far as possible from the launch stage in a home made gliding machine (see entry form for full specifications), but invariably, and in the spirit of Moomba "Lets get together and have fun" competitors enter for fun and a little silliness. This years prizes are as follows: 1st Prize: Trip for two to Fiji plus a 90 minute 'Flight Experience' flight simulation, 2nd Prize: Trip for two to Brisbane plus a 60 minute 'Flight Experience' flight simulation, 3rd Prize: Global Ballooning trip for two over Melbourne plus a 30 minute 'Flight Experience' flight simulation.
All participants in 2009 will receive a Birdman Rally Prize pack including passes to the Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne 360 - Melbourne Observation Deck at Rialto, National Sports Museum and Eureka Skydeck 88.
