About Williamstown
Acting Lieutenant Robbins arrived at Point Gellibrand in 1803 and the area was later explored by John Batman in 1835. Williamstown was named in 1837 by Govenor Bourke after King George IV. During the gold rush of 1851 - 1854 Williamstown grew rapidly as many prospectors passed through the town on the way to the goldfields. Convicts providing a large part of the labour to build the lighthouse, stockade and gun battery. Williamstown was proclaimed a city in 1919. Today Williamstown is an affluent community with many up market art galleries, shops and accommodation. Williamstown is easily reached from the centre of Melbourne on the western side of the Westgate Bridge.

Mechanics Institute: Located in Electra St, Williamstown the Mechanics Institute is one of Hobsons Bay's most historic sites. The foundation stone of the present building was laid in 1860. The institute now houses the Williamstown Historic society and a wealth of memorabilia about the local area and it's development through the years. It is open to the public Sundays between 12noon and 4pm
Timeball Tower at Point Gellibrand: Located in Nelson place, Williamstown the bluestone Timeball Tower was built by convicts 1855. it originally operated as a lighthouse and still operates as a timeball. The tower is part of the point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park.
The Old Morgue: Again another colonial Wiliiamstown building constructed by convicts in 1859. Constructed from bluestone it was purpose built as the first morgue in Victoria to accommodate the deceased who were previously held in the local hotels prior to burial. The morgue ceased operation in 1926 due the odour and the sight of the bodies.
