About Werribee
Initially named Wyndham in honour of the Scottish soldier Henry Wyndhan the area was renamed Werribee in 1884 after the river on which it was founded. Werribee is believed to have been derived from the aboriginal word which meant 'spine' or 'backbone' and described the curve of the river. Brothers Thomas and Andrew Chrinside were early land holders and Andrews two sons inherited the land in around 1890. Development of the land began in the early 1900's when the land was divided up amongst tenant farmers.
